The Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) made a major decision by officially dismissing head coach Roberto Mancini early Friday morning (October 25th). The decision comes as Saudi Arabia faces mounting pressure following a string of disappointing results in the third round of 2026 World Cup Qualifiers in the Asia zone.
Mancini’s tenure was marked by only one win in four qualifying matches, a narrow 2-1 victory over China. His relationship with fans had also deteriorated, especially after a 0-0 draw with Bahrain, during which Mancini openly expressed frustration with Saudi supporters.
Upcoming Match Against Indonesia
Saudi Arabia’s coaching change comes just weeks before their scheduled match against Indonesia on November 19, 2024. With Mancini’s exit, speculation is mounting on who will take the reins. Here’s what SAFF had to say:
“The Saudi Arabian Football Federation Board of Directors and national team coach Roberto Mancini have reached a mutual agreement to terminate the contract. We thank Mr. Mancini and wish him all the best in his future career.”
SAFF added that the new head coach’s name will be revealed in the coming days after completing contractual procedures.
Potential Replacements for Mancini
Reports indicate that Saudi Arabia is already eyeing three top candidates. Herve Renard, who led Saudi Arabia in the 2022 World Cup and masterminded their historic 2-1 win over Argentina, is one of the frontrunners. Renard is well-acquainted with the team and has an established rapport with the players.
Another potential candidate is Ramon Diaz, who also brings experience to the table. Perhaps the most surprising possibility, however, is Zinedine Zidane, who has reportedly been approached as a contender for the role.
